Vienna
I’m Vienna. I’m 25 years old now and I’ve been volunteering for the Cancer Society in some way, since I was five.
My mum was diagnosed with stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma when I was young and was successfully treated for this. But when I was 18 she developed metastatic breast cancer and passed away four years later.
The Cancer Society were a huge support in really practical ways. My Mum was refused a sickness benefit and told she was ‘too young to have cancer’, so finances were a struggle.
We’ve been involved in volunteering ever since. I would do Daffodil Day collections with my aunt. But as a teenager I was embarrassed to be seen hanging with her so collected with my friends instead. Now I have my full licence I’m able to be an area coordinator on Daffodil Day
30 Stories for 30 Years
In 2020 the Cancer Society celebrated the 30th anniversary of Daffodil Day.
It also marked a 30 year relationship with ANZ as the Principal Sponsor of Daffodil Day. We want to thank the team at ANZ for their amazing support.
To acknowledge this we found 30+ people to tell their story. These stories talk about the generosity of everyday New Zealanders making a difference for people with cancer. They talk about the effect of cancer on people and on whānau, they talk about hope, and they talk about the work we do here at the Cancer Society.
