Join our team of volunteers to influence change and help prevent cancer in Aotearoa!

As a Cancer Prevention Advocate, you will be part of our equity-focused Health Promotion Team working to promote our evidence-based prevention strategies, and stop cancer before it starts.

  • Cancer Prevention Advocate are more than volunteers, they’re part of our Health Promotion Team and work closely with us to promote our key messages around cancer risk factors.
  • Cancer Prevention Advocate want to help create a healthier future for Aotearoa – a future with less cancer.

 

  • Promote our key health promotion messages through social media platforms and in person
  • Work on our live advocacy campaigns 
  • Share our campaigns on social media or through local media
  • Participate in events and engage with communities
  • Advocate for the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders
  • Engage with local politicians and decision-makers

  • Are you passionate about advocating for the health and well-being of New Zealanders?
  • Do you want to make meaningful connections and gain real-life Health Promotion experience?
  • Do you enjoy engaging with others and working in a fun team environment?

If you answered yes to these questions, then this might be the role for you!

  • There are no set hours for this role and any hours are subject to change depending on the capacity of each Advocate and what is required.
  • Hours and commitments will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis to ensure everyone is comfortable with their set tasks and responsibilities.
  • Cancer Prevention Advocates are required to attend training 1-2 times per year.

Meet some of our advocates!

Kia ora, my name is Negisty and I am a Health Promotion Advocate for the Cancer Society Wellington Division. I am in my second year at Victoria University studying towards a Bachelor of Health and majoring in population health policy, service delivery and health promotion.

My passion for health promotion comes from my belief that it is the most important role in enhancing people’s health and quality of life. This role allows me to make a difference in social and environmental factors that affect people’s health.

Hey, my name is Carys and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Health majoring in health promotion at Victoria University. I enjoy getting to know people, engaging with community and helping others!

This role is a great opportunity to further develop my health promotion and advocacy skills with the Cancer Society. I am looking forward to seeing where this experience may take me in the future.

Kia Ora! My name is Anika and I am a Health Promotion Advocate for the Cancer Society Wellington Division. I Am Currently In year 12 at Paraparaumu College. I enjoy getting to know new people, helping others, and getting involved in my community.

I have always lived in Waikanae beach and I love being outdoors, dancing, and creating. This role is a great opportunity to learn about ways to enhance well-being for myself and others, and develop skills in health promotion and advocacy.

Kia ora, my name is Anna and I am a Health Promotion Advocate for the Cancer Society Wellington division. I am 15 and in year 11 at Paraparaumu College. In my spare time I enjoy dancing and hanging out with my friends at the beach.

This role will enable me to give back to the Kāpiti community and to help others. It is a great opportunity to learn more about how cancer can be prevented and to contribute to work in this space.

Kia ora from the cancer-fighting realm of Aotearoa! I am Ayesha Azmi Akhtar, a Cancer Prevention Advocate for the Wellington Division of the Cancer Society. I also do research on brain cancer in the McConnell lab at Victoria University of Wellington.

Armed with degrees in Genetics, I have been working in the research sphere for about 7 years. In my role with the Cancer Society, I've spearheaded community events, uniting locals in the fight against cancer and spreading awareness like confetti.

Volunteering with the Cancer Society has always been fulfilling in more ways than one. I love interacting with the community and engaging with them in creative ways, it fuels my enthusiasm and gives my research purpose.
