1 in 3.
That’s how many New Zealanders will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetimes.
That’s also how many people you could help by making this year’s Daffodil Day fundraiser a huge success, says the Cancer Society.
1 in 3 are the numbers driving this year’s campaign but there are more numbers the Cancer Society is keen to share ahead of Daffodil Day 2024 on Friday 30 August.
Daffodil Day campaign lead Arron Peacock says none of the support services the Cancer Society provides the “1 in 3” would be possible without the generous donations from the New Zealand public each year.
“One in three is a lot of us. For the Cancer Society to meet that huge need we are relying on that continued generosity, so we want people to know the true value of their donation,” says Arron.
“As we approach another Daffodil Day it is a great opportunity to reflect and share with our supporters what impact we have been able to make with their support over the last 12 months.”
Over the last year:
- Almost 11,000 people have benefitted from the Cancer Society’s nursing and social work support both face-to-face and remotely.
- Cancer Society’s team of volunteer drivers have travelled more than one million kilometres getting patients safely to and from their treatment.
- The Cancer Society has provided 52,892 nights’ accommodation at its lodges for those needing a home away from home while receiving treatment.
- The Cancer Society’s free 0800 CANCER helpline received 6,395 calls for information and support.
- The Cancer Society directed $5.3 million into research to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment by some of this country’s brightest and best cancer researchers.
“We all know someone affected by cancer and the toll this takes on them and their friends and whānau. But there is hope and we’re saying, ‘it starts with you’,” says Arron.
“By giving this August people can help us continue our mahi supporting people through their cancer journey, and our work to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer in this country.”
Daffodil Day donations can be made online at daffodilday.org.nz any time, at any branch of the ANZ bank – the Cancer Society’s major sponsor, anywhere a daffodil day QR code is displayed and look out for Daffodil Day street collectors on Friday 30 August and Saturday 31 August too in some locations.
