1 in 3 New Zealanders will get cancer in their lifetime. It could be you. It could be someone you love.

When trail runner Helene Barron was diagnosed with tongue cancer in April 2023, she felt like she was “standing at the start line of the biggest endurance event of (her) life”.

Through both sport events and life Helene knows the importance of a support crew.  Throughout her cancer journey, she was supported by her family, friends and by the Cancer Society.

“Daffodil House and the crew that were there were like my family. We called it Cancer Camp… Everyone was just so supportive of each other. Just being able to be in that environment and understand what each other was going through meant a lot.”

Helene represents the one in three New Zealanders who will get cancer in their lifetime.

When you donate to the Cancer Society this Daffodil Day, you’re helping fund support services that can make the hardest moments a little less lonely, including accommodation during treatment, local check-ins, and access to counselling and practical support. You’re also funding breakthrough cancer research and prevention programmes, so we can work together towards a future free from cancer.
